History

Hazel Grove, originally made up of the townships Norbury, Torkington and Bosden-cum-Handforth, has a rich history dating back to the Domesday Survey of 1086. In 1560, Richard Bullock built a smithy that became the Bullock Smithy Inn, leading the area to be known as Bullock Smithy.

The village saw significant religious activity, with John Wesley famously preaching here in 1750. By 1833, with a population of over 3,000, the Church of St Thomas was consecrated at Norbury. Due to negative connotations, the village elders changed the name to Hazel Grove in 1836, drawing from local place names and an inn already using the name.

Torkington Park is a central spot featuring walking paths, picnic areas and sports facilities, including football pitches, tennis courts and crown-green bowling. The Hazel Grove Snooker Club on Macclesfield Road is one of the largest snooker venues in the UK, hosting national competitions and disability sports events. Additionally, there are two cricket clubs, Hazel Grove CC and Norbury CC, which also offer lacrosse and bowling facilities.
